HIGHLIGHTS
The special shows of «Handwerk & Design» illuminate
the theme of crafts and design from various perspectives, demonstrating a range of
expressive forms. Awards by international juries ensure a high level of interest and
motivation.
EXEMPLA
EXEMPLA has been the biggest special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse
for 40 years, providing a particular point of interest for both trade visitors and
the general public. In 2010 the focus here will be on ceramics, with an exhibition
reflecting the broad uses of this material in our every day lives under the title
"Ceramics shapes the earth". The outstanding work of internationally renowned ceramics

FURTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Under the title "Ways to Design – Training in Bavaria",
Bavarian training schools, academies and universities present a wide variety of exhibits,
reflecting virtually all types of material and areas of life. What is more, trainees
and teachers also provide live demonstrations of special craft and design techniques.
In the
«Handwerk & Design» shop,
young art can be purchased at attractive prices: the goldsmith and silversmith class
of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg offers small product series which have emerged
from work on unique specimens. The shop is run by the studenst themselves and offers
an unusual exhibition concept.
One fascinating element generates an authentic ambience: the
trade
fair café "Zeitgeist" at «Handwerk & Design». Freely
designed by students of interior design at Rosenheim Technical College, based on the
theme ceramics of EXEMPLA 2010.

An
insight into avantgarde international jewellery design is provided by a small but
representative selection from the collection of the Deutsche Goldschmiedeschule Hanau
as part of the
theme boulevard. Here there are works by internationallly
recognised jewellery artists such as David Watkins, Anton Cepka, Perter Chang and
Hermann Jünger. One participant in the theme boulevard is the vocational college
for design, jewellery and utensils of the Pforzheim Technical College for Jewellery
and Watches. The motto of the exhibition this year is “Pure-Pure”. The
double meaning of the word is reflected in the program. Apart from showing craft techniques,
there is also an investigation into the purity of materials and colour.
«Handwerk & Design» 2010 provides a special
platform for winners of the
BKV
Prize 2009 for Young Applied Arts: all the work of the prize-winners and of the
applicants who made it through the final round is exhibited here - for the first time
since the award ceremony. The
BKV prize is awarded by the renowned
Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein e.V. (Bavarian Craft Council) to talented youngsters
in the field of arts and crafts.
«Handwerk & Design» also houses the
mobile
exhibition "Speed" by Think Tank e.V., a European initiative for applied
arts and fine arts which is currently touring European galleries. Eleven experts take
up the theme of "speed" - seemingly alien to the field of arts and crafts - and put
it into concrete shape in the creation of individual objects.
